3PL, Warehouse Software or Freight Help: Which Do You Need?
If you pack orders yourself and can't keep up, you need a 3PL. If you run your own warehouse and can't see labor or docks, you need software. If pallets and trucks are the bottleneck, you need freight help.
KSP Supply Chain Solutions
If your team packs orders in-house and can't keep up, you need a 3PL. If you already run your own warehouse and can't see where labor and dock time go, you need operations software. If parcels are fine but pallets and truckloads are the headache, you need a freight partner.
Each one shows up as specific signals in your own operation.
Signs you need a 3PL
You need a 3PL when fulfillment eats the time and space your business needs for growth. The signs show up on the floor before they show up in a spreadsheet:
- Orders sit overnight because the team ran out of hours.
- Mis-ships and missing items are driving refund requests and support tickets.
- A retailer wants EDI, labels and routing-guide compliance, and nobody on staff has done it.
- Kits or subscription boxes get built by whoever's free, so they look different every time.
- Peak season means overtime, temp labor and a garage full of inventory.
At 500 orders a month or more, with a manageable number of SKUs, a 3PL takes packing labor, overtime and storage space off your books.
The checks that matter when you compare 3PLs: order accuracy, same-day cutoff, whether they build kits on site, whether they've shipped to your retailers, and who picks up the phone when something breaks.
KSP Fulfillment, KSP's 3PL in Brooklyn Park, MN, packs orders in under 30 minutes, and orders in by 2 PM CST ship the same day. Order accuracy runs at 99.999%. Account managers work on site, about 30 feet from the warehouse floor, and kits get built on the same floor that ships the orders. Get a fulfillment quote.
Signs you need warehouse operations software
If you run your own warehouse, or you are a 3PL, the fix is visibility into your own floor.
You need operations software when the warehouse runs but nobody can tell you, in the moment, where the hours went:
- Labor cost per order moves every week and nobody can explain why.
- Trucks show up unannounced, wait at the dock, and dwell time costs you with the carrier.
- Projects like a retail reset or a new client launch live in someone's head or a shared spreadsheet.
- Requests between departments get lost in chat threads and email.
A WMS tracks inventory and orders. KSPHQ covers the work around it: people, docks, projects and internal requests.
KSP Technologies built KSPHQ inside KSP's own warehouse. Workforce Control™ shows labor at the task level in real time and forecasts labor cost. Dock Control™ schedules appointments and tracks dwell time and dock-to-stock. Project Control™ tracks owners and blockers. Ticket Control™ routes internal requests with SLA countdowns. KSP Fulfillment was the first customer, and go-live runs two to four weeks. See KSPHQ.
Signs you need freight help
Freight problems look different from parcel problems. Your DTC orders go out fine, but:
- Retail and wholesale orders move by pallet, and you're booking LTL one shipment at a time.
- Inbound containers and truckloads arrive late or unplanned, and receiving falls behind.
- You're paying for full truckloads that ship half empty, or splitting loads that could combine.
That points to a freight partner who handles LTL, partial truckload and full truckload moves and plans them around your warehouse schedule.
KSP Integrated Logistics, KSP's transportation business, is preparing to launch, with services available in phases. If freight is the problem, tell us about your shipping needs and our team will follow up.
When it's more than one
Growing brands often need two of these at once. The usual order of operations: fix fulfillment first, because missed and wrong orders cost you customers today. Freight and software problems cost money, but they rarely cost you a customer this week.
A brand that moves fulfillment to a 3PL also hands off most of its warehouse software problem, since the 3PL runs the floor. A 3PL that wants to run its own floor better looks at software. Freight comes into the picture once retail volume and inbound containers grow.
That sequence is how KSP grew too. KSP started in 2012 as a veteran-owned kitting and fulfillment company, built its own software to run its warehouse, and is now preparing to launch transportation under KSP Integrated Logistics. All three businesses work out of 8100 Oxbow Creek Dr in Brooklyn Park, under KSP Supply Chain Solutions.
A quick way to decide
Answer three questions:
- Who packs your orders today? If it's your own team and they're falling behind, start with a 3PL.
- Do you run a warehouse? If yes, and you can't see labor, docks or projects in real time, start with operations software.
- What's late, parcels or pallets? If it's pallets and trucks, start with freight.
